Torshavn » City Info

Tórshavn is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands. Tórshavn is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy Island, the largest island of the Faroe Islands.

In the last few years, the voyage to the Faroe Islands has remarkably increased, contributing to a growth in tourism.

Tórshavn means 'Thor's Harbour', named after the god of thunder and lightning in Norse mythology. Founded in the 10th century, Tórshavn is considered one of the oldest capitals in Northern Europe. The city of Tórshavn is home to many industries, including fish-processing, shipbuilding, construction and handicrafts that contribute to the city's economy.

Known mainly for the Vikings, Tórshavn is surrounded by mountain Húsareyn to the north, at the height of 1140ft and Kirkjubøreyn to the southwest at 1100ft. Today, Tórshavn looks like a modern city with modern infrastructure. It is not much isolated as it used to be in the past centuries. It has even retained its unique character, mesmerising charm that sets it different from any other capital in the world.

The city witnesses thousands of people who come to enjoy its striking and dramatic scenery, ancient history, culture and the fortress built in 1630 to protect the market from pirates.
